What is Plein Air? A plein air painting is done, not in the comfort of a studio, but outdoors in an attempt to capture the spirit of the scene. Time is of the essence, as the changing light, tides and weather conditions demand quick decisions, accurate color interpretations and lively brushwork. This requires an ability to synthesize a wealth of constantly changing information. In spite of all the obstacles, there is something indescribably alluring about this quest. If successful, the result is a painting that is expressive and full of emotion, rather than safe and perhaps overworked. The painting is completed on site with only minor touches in the studio.
